Oolite south beach11/5/2023 You may know it as Maracuya, grenadya or passion fruit. Purple passionflower ( Passiflora incarnata) has a round yellow fruit that is super tasty. Instead, humans love passion vines for their beautiful flowers and their delicious fruit. Passion leaves might be lunch for caterpillars, but they don’t taste good to humans and other animals. Passion vines ( Passiflora spp.) of all species are the food that our caterpillars eat the most, and where we lay our eggs. ![]() Did you know, most butterflies only live for a week or two, but we live for several months! Pollen gives us the strength to live a long life. Nectar is mostly sugar, but pollen is full of vitamins and protein. ![]() 10 million years ago, the Plain formed the bed of Lake Idaho. It also has lots of pollen, which we love! All butterflies drink nectar, but we Heliconians like to eat pollen as well. One of the worlds largest freshwater lakebed oolites is the Shoofly Oolite, 5 a section of the Glenns Ferry Formation on southwestern Idaho s Snake River Plain. ![]() We Heliconians all love the Oolite room because it has our two favorite foods– Corkystem passion vines ( Passiflora suberosa) and firebush flowers ( Hamelia patens)! Firebush has delicious nectar that is a favorite for butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds. But be careful to look at us with your eyes only! Catching us with your hands hurts our delicate wings. We fly a bit slower than other butterflies so it is easy to see us gently gliding by. And then look up and see if you can spot us as butterflies. Take a look around and see if you can find us munching away on leaves. And guess what? Our caterpillars look like little aliens with spiky white or orange bodies and black spots. Can you guess which animal they look like? That’s right, a zebra! These butterflies are covered in stripes, but instead of black and white, they have black and yellow stripes. Zebra longwing butterflies are the easiest to find. They also have pretty white spots you can see when our wings are closed and black spots on their upper wing areas. Gulf Fritillaries are also orange but have a block chain pattern along the edges of their wings. Julias have beautiful orange wings and look almost like leaves. Under the cloudless South Florida sky, drops of golden light kiss bare skin. We look similar in size and shape, but we have a few ways you can tell the difference between us. We are all members of a group of butterflies called the Heliconias, so the three of us are like cousins. There's going to be so many opportunities for the community to come and join us and that's what really this is about," said Scholl. Here in the Oolite Room, you can spot three native butterflies– we are the Zebra Longwing ( Heliconius charithonia), Julia ( Dryas julia), and Gulf Fritillary ( Agraulis vanillae). We want them to enjoy a film, we want them to come and take a class with us. We want people to come and enjoy the beautiful garden that it'll be the centerpiece of this new building. "In our new home, we really want it to be both a place for artists to come and make serious work but we also want it to be a community gathering. The new space will open in Early 2024 with hopes of creating a cultural hub that combines the very best of talent and art South Florida has to offer. But we are finally going to set a few aside to be able to bring international artists," states Scholl. They come into town and look at applications and they choose the artists who get free studios. ![]() "So the 21 studios will mostly go to local artists and those artists are always chosen by a jury of individual art professionals. The 26,850 Square Feet campus will offer over 200 classes to the community.Īnd with the new expansion, comes new opportunities for more local and international artists to call Oolite home. We are going to have big exhibition space, we are going to have a makers space, where people can mess around with fancy tools and we're going to have two classrooms," says Dennis Scholl, President & CEO of Oolite Arts. "We are going to have 21 art studios, free for artists, we're going to have a theater, where the community can come and see a film or hear a lecture. Since 1984, Miami leading arts nonprofit, Oolite Arts is a resource as well as a community space for up and coming artists in South Florida.Ĭurrently, the organization resides in Miami Beach and offers free studio space, exhibition opportunities, direct support and programming to visual artists and filmmakers that need help in advancing their careers.įor their upcoming 40th anniversary, Oolite Arts will be debuting a new home in Miami located on 75 NW and 72nd Street.
